PRESS RELEASE - The Mid-Ulster Advertiser, November, 2002
Three year Lavey Music Project
The Termoneeny Community Group is commencing a three year programme to promote music in the Parish of Lavey. The group applied to The Arts Council for Northern Ireland in 2001 for assistance to undertake such a project after successfully running a similar pilot project.
The group have been offered funding assistance of £26,447 by The Arts Council with matching funding for the £31,000 programme being raised by the local community.
The project which will be organised and managed by the Associations arts sub committee - Lavey Arts and Drama Society - will involve the teaching of music to all interested individuals in the South Deny area with occasional music nights being organised to perform and celebrate participant’s musicianship.
Professional tutoring is being offered in the guitar, tin whistle, fiddle, flute, banjo and bodhran. New comers and intermediate musicians above six years old are welcomed.
This project is the first structured effort to teach music to the inhabitants of the area. It will allow the group to develop the level of interest exhibited during the pilot programme and to produce a solid base from this original one- off project. The result should be a much needed strengthening of the Parish’s artistic base and greater participation in future performance and social events. At a wider level, the project should significantly contribute to the development of music in social, cultural and artistic tens in the Magherafelt area.
For further information on the project or details on registering as a participant contact Ignatius at 07764 634168 after 7.00 pm.
