TERMONEENY COMMUNITY GROUP, LAVEY

Border Trek

Members and friends of the Termoneeny Community Group, Lavey, recently completed the Co-operation Ireland ‘Border Trek’ cycle challenge. The two day event, which raises finds for cross-community programmes, was staged over the weekend of June 26th & 27th. Starting in Enniskillen, the cyclists travelled via Omagh, Sligo, Boyle and Carrick-on-shannon, to complete the 200 mile circuit.

Group Chairperson - Donald McGill - who has took part in several maracycles, is already looking forward to next years event. States Donal, “Cycling is becoming quite popular in our Parish. All age groups can enjoy it and it certainly is a good means of maintaining fitness.”

“This event offers something for us to aim at. It also reflects what the Community Group is all about - cross-community participation for the benefit of all. The Group strives to create social contexts for different groups and people to meet and enjoy themselves - getting fit is a bonus.”

Another of the participants, Mr Felix McMullen, who lost over three stone in training for Border Trek ‘99, hopes that more peopled will take up the challenge next year, pointing out that the socialising aspect was equally rewarding.

Nearer home, and through support from Oakleaf Community Network and The Rural Community Network, the Group intend to open up heritage trails and walks with the aim of getting more people out and about, meeting one and another and gaining a wider understanding of their locality.
